NETGEAR Brings High-Speed Wireless networking home

--NETGEAR’s 11Mbps Wireless11X Products Designed Specifically

to Enhance Multimedia Performance--

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – NETGEAR, Inc., (COMDEX Booth #L609) a provider of small business and home networking products, today announced NETGEAR’s Wireless11X networking suite of products, a solution designed specifically to take advantage of the high bandwidth needs of broadband Internet access in the home. NETGEAR’s Wireless11X suite of products use technology from wireless pioneer ShareWave, which is the first to support high-fidelity multimedia content, such as MPEG-2 video and CD quality audio at 11Mbps data rates. In addition, Wireless11X delivers ease-of-use and reliability features optimized for the home environment. Wireless11X is able to overcome performance-robbing interference from Microwave ovens and 2.4Ghz phones by automatically detecting severe interference and moving traffic to a new "clear" channel without any user intervention.

NETGEAR’s new Wireless11X products will provide home desktop computer users an easier path to extending the benefits of broadband Internet access throughout the home since there will be no need to run additional wiring. Performance of bandwidth-hungry multimedia applications such as: Streaming Audio & Video, MP3 playback, Internet telephony, and online gaming will benefit significantly from the NETGEAR Wireless11X products’ multimedia capability. NETGEAR Wireless11X products incorporate ShareWave’s Whitecap™ network protocol, which was designed specifically for the needs of the home user. Providing this type of Quality of Service is what separates NETGEAR’s new Home wireless solutions from existing Enterprise wireless solutions. Whitecap also provides a forward interoperability path with the IEEE 802.11b Enterprise wireless LAN standard.

To demonstrate the multimedia support provided by the new Wireless11X products, NETGEAR will be bundling the following applications: Net2Phone Voice-over-IP calling cards and client software, Real Jukebox, Real Player Basic, Real SlideShow, Real Producer, and Spinner's Online Music/Internet Radio.

NETGEAR Wireless11X Key Features & Benefits

Cost Effective - Because Wireless11X was designed for home peer-to-peer networking, there is no need for the expensive access point that is common with Enterprise wireless products.

High Performance - Wireless11X utilizes its powerful radio, a high-performance antenna, ShareWave’s Whitecap™ network protocol, and Forward Error Correcting (FEC) abilities to provide enhanced performance. Wireless11X was designed specifically for multimedia applications, but the performance gain over other wireless products apply to standard file and resource sharing as well.

Robust - Interference from Microwave ovens and 2.4Ghz phones can seriously degrade performance or disable the network completely. Wireless11X supports Forward Error Correction (FEC) and channel agility. FEC corrects errors on the fly, increasing network performance and reliability, while channel agility automatically detects severe interference and moves traffic to a new "clear" channel without any user intervention.

Secure - Wireless11X supports 40-bit encryption, helping to keep the wireless home network safe from eavesdropping or hacking.

Far Reaching – In typical home layouts, Wireless11X supports a range of up to 150’ without performance degradation through several walls and obstructions.

Easy-to-Install – Wireless 11X is designed to be easy-to-install and use, incorporating features such as open enrollment, which allows devices to be seamlessly added to the network without complex reconfiguration, and master redundancy, which ensures there are no single points of failure in the network.
