Start at http://linux-firewall-tools.com/linux/faq/index.html. Look for the Linux & Mediaone FAQ.

Here's a summary of what to do to get you started:

  • Download the sample firewall. Deny everything. Log everything. You will be probed multiple times a week by script kiddies looking for common exploits.

  • Don't run any services you don't understand. The best thing is initially to block everything inbound with the firewall. That way if something is running you are not aware of, no one can reach it anyway.

  • When you want to add a specific server, like a web server for example, run it internally with the port blocked to the outside world until you have a chance to research the vulnerabilities of the software.  Then open the appropriate port in the firewall.

  • If you want to run a telnet or ftp server, I would strongly recommend using tcp_wrappers and a hosts.allow and hosts.deny (see man hosts.allow) file to only allow specific addresses to connect to it.

    The hosts.deny file is easy:

    #deny everything!

    ALL:ALL

hosts.allow should be more selective :)

  • Oh, did I mention to log everything :)? Review logs regularly and send reports of attempted breakins to abuse@yourISP. But be warned if someone does get in, they may alter your logs.

  • Also, know what daemons normally run on the box (ps aux | less). It will help if someone breaks in and installs something you don't want there.    Example: A thread on a recent breakin mentioned that the hacker's program changed its name to httpd on startup. Of course, if you are not running a web server (I'm not)....an httpd suddenly running would look awful suspicious......

  • Subscribe to bugtraq.   This is a Unix-oriented mailing list devoted to keeping people informed of exploits.
