Using a Orinoco PCI adapter on a Windows 2000 computer causes a very long boot delay where 2000 looks like it hangs at booting. Actually, 2000 would pause for approximately 2 minutes 45 seconds while loading device drivers for the PCMCIA adapter before continuing to boot up.  This in turn causes 2000 to take approximately 5 minutes to boot up to where you could finally log on.

The following FAQ from SCM Micro explains the problem and solution:

Q: Why does Windows 2000 take so long to boot after installing the Wireless LAN PCI reader?

A: If the reader you are installing is using the TI PCI 1225 controller chip, it may cause Windows 2000 to take up to 5 minutes to boot! At first, it may seem like the system has stopped working, but if given time, it will boot and then the reader and Wireless LAN card will work normally. The delay is caused by a very long "time out" that should not occur.

To correct this issue, download the file (right-click to download, otherwise you'll see the file contents instead) http://www.scmmicro.com/security/docs/slowboot.reg and run it. This will make 2 changes to the registry which will reduce the length of the "time out". This change should not affect the operation of Windows 2000 other than the shorter boot time.

With the registry change, there should be only about a 15 second startup delay that happens when the PCMCIA drivers are loading for the TI 1225 Chipset.
