The SMC card uses the Intersil chipset.  You can download the linux drivers from the linux-wlan project Web site. Make sure you download the 11Mbps project!  Then follow the tip below. [Thanks to klaatu for this tip!]

I was able to get this card to work, and to work well, using the wireless_tools tools and the pcmcia-cs-3.1.22 drivers and utilities package.

It was necessary to recompile the kernel and modules, and copy /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 to /etc/rc.d/rc.inet-wvlan and change "eth0" to "wvlan0".

Once all this is done, reboot, insert the card, and if the cardmgr doesn't automatically load it, insmod wvlan_cs -- use "iwconfig" to set parameters!

Be careful of the "wlan" and "wlan-ng" packages, since they broke the wvlan_cs module and set me on a false trail for about three days. The wvlan_cs.0 module is the right one for this card.
