No response from sharing Client computer (PC) ping can be caused by:

  • Personal firewall programs such as BlackICE, ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security, etc. can cause problems with LAN operation.  Disable or uninstall the program and see if that solves the problem.  If it does, consult the program's Help for information on how to configure it so that it doesn't interfere with LAN operation.

  • Loose, bad or misconnected cable from Local network NIC to sharing Client computer NIC.    Check this diagram for an example setup.

  • IP number not set correctly.  Check to see if you've entered the proper IP number on your client computer.  Right click on Network Neighborhood and select Properties.  Click on the Configuration tab and scroll down to the TCP/IP protocol item as shown below

Network Control Panel dialog box

Now double click on the TCP/IP protocol item, select the "IP Address" tab and make sure you've specified an IP address in the range of 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254 and the subnet mask is set as shown below.

TCP/IP Properties dialog box

Also:

  • click the "WINS Configuration" tab and check that Disable WINS resolution is selected.
  • click the "Gateway" tab and check that 192.168.0.1 is entered
  • click the "DNS Configuration" tab and make sure Disable DNS is selected.

NOTE: If you are troubleshooting a network that has been working, and you see information in the Gateway or DNS Configuration tabs, write down the information before you clear it.  You may have to re-enter it once you find the problem!
