Networking gear has a way of separating enthusiasts from their money. The logic is easy to follow: you want your home network to be fast and reliable, so you reach for the most capable hardware on the shelf and assume the price tag reflects the benefit you will actually feel. Very often, it does not.

The pattern across almost every category is the same. The expensive tier exists to serve businesses, homelabs, and edge cases, and manufacturers are happy to sell that same capability to households that will never come close to using it. The trick is learning to tell the difference between a feature you will genuinely benefit from and one you are simply paying to have sit idle. Here are eight upgrades where that line gets blurred most often, and where most homes are better off spending less.

Gaming Routers

Gaming routers are among the easiest devices to overspend on, largely because the marketing speaks directly to the one thing every online player dreads: lag. Add some aggressive antennas, a dashboard full of priority sliders, and the word “gaming” to the box, and a price north of £400 starts to feel justified. In reality, a large part of that premium is the branding itself.

There are situations where these routers help. If your connection is regularly hammered by downloads, uploads, streams, and a house full of devices all at once, solid Quality of Service and traffic prioritisation can stop your game traffic from being buried under everything else. What a gaming router cannot do is fix a poor connection from your provider, weak Wi-Fi coverage, or a game server on the other side of the world. If those are your real problems, no amount of gaming branding will solve them.

Wi-Fi 7 Mesh Kits

Wi-Fi 7 mesh kits are sold on a compelling list of promises: the newest standard, higher theoretical speeds, 6GHz performance, Multi-Link Operation, improved backhaul, and whole-home coverage in one tidy package. It is a specification sheet designed to make a high price feel forgivable.

The catch is that the most expensive part of the standard is often the part you will never notice. If the majority of your devices are still on Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6, or wired connections, they do not suddenly gain Wi-Fi 7 speeds simply because the router supports them. If your actual complaint is coverage rather than raw throughput, a more affordable Wi-Fi 6 or 6E mesh kit, or even a good single router paired with a wired access point, will usually serve you better for less.

Fully Managed Switches

A fully managed switch commands a higher price because it can handle VLANs, link aggregation, traffic monitoring, access control, granular port settings, and remote management. Every one of those features earns its keep in a business network or a serious homelab. In a typical home, most of them will sit untouched.

The useful test is whether you can name the specific thing you intend to configure. If you can point to a VLAN you plan to set up or a monitoring task you need, the managed features are worth paying for. If you simply want more Ethernet ports in the same room, an unmanaged switch does the job for a fraction of the cost, and nobody needs a management dashboard to run five cables.

PoE Switches

Power over Ethernet is genuinely clever, which is exactly what makes these switches so easy to overbuy. Running both data and power down a single cable to an access point, security camera, or VoIP phone keeps a setup tidy and flexible. The difficulty is that pricing climbs steeply the moment you start stacking on more ports, higher per-port wattage, and a larger total power budget.

If your plan is to power a single access point or one camera, a large PoE switch is dramatic overkill. A compact PoE switch, a switch with just a couple of PoE ports, or even a single PoE injector will cover that need at a far lower price. Buy for what you are actually powering, not for a future estate of devices you may never install.

10GbE Switches

The appeal of 10GbE is obvious, but it is an upgrade the rest of your network has to earn before it makes sense. The higher cost is not only the switch itself but everything that comes with it: more heat, more power draw, and often additional spending on SFP+ modules, DAC cables, network cards, or better cooling.

For most homes, 2.5GbE is the smarter middle ground. It is already comfortably faster than standard gigabit, it is increasingly built into new motherboards and mini PCs, and it is far cheaper to build a network around. Unless you have devices that can genuinely saturate a 10GbE link, you are paying for headroom that will sit empty. And if the device you had in mind is a network drive, first check whether you actually need a NAS or a simpler DAS.

Cable Modems and Modem-router Combos

Renting a modem or router from your internet provider is a slow, pointless drain on your money, and buying your own is usually the right call. The mistake comes when the urge to escape that rental fee tips over into overspending in the name of future-proofing.

The pricier models cost more for reasons that may not apply to you: a newer DOCSIS version, multi-gig Ethernet ports, provider certification, or built-in router and Wi-Fi features in combo units. The sensible path is to avoid both the cheapest option and the most expensive one, confirm the device is certified for your provider, and make sure everything in the chain actually works together. A capable modem feeding a weak router, or vice versa, wastes the money you spent on either.

Premium Ethernet Cables

This is one of the quietest ways to overpay, precisely because the sums involved look small. Cat 8 cables, and anything sold with “gaming” on the packaging, are marketed on bandwidth figures that read impressively on a listing and mean almost nothing in a home. Cat 8 is designed for short runs in data centres operating at 25 or 40 gigabits. Your home network is not that, and it will not become that by buying the cable.

For the overwhelming majority of households, a good Cat 6 cable already handles everything you are likely to throw at it, including multi-gig connections, at a fraction of the price. Cat 6a is a reasonable choice if you are wiring longer runs or want a little headroom. Beyond that, you are paying a premium for a specification your equipment cannot use, and no cable will make an existing connection faster than the hardware at either end allows.

Tri-band Routers

Tri-band routers add a second 5GHz band (or on newer models a 6GHz band) on top of the usual 2.4GHz and 5GHz pairing, and they are priced accordingly. The theory is that spreading your devices across an extra band eases congestion. The reality is that most homes never generate enough simultaneous high-bandwidth traffic to fill the bands they already have.

Tri-band earns its cost in specific settings: a busy household with a large number of demanding devices, or a mesh system using a dedicated band for wireless backhaul. If that describes you, it is a sensible upgrade. If your network is a handful of phones, a couple of laptops, and a smart TV, a solid dual-band router will handle the load without the premium, and the third band will go largely unused.

Spend Where it Counts

None of this makes expensive networking gear bad. It is capable equipment, and in the right home it is money well spent. The point is that the right home is often not yours, and paying for capability you cannot use delivers nothing but a heavier receipt. Before you upgrade, look honestly at what the rest of your setup can support, and remember the rule that undoes most networking splurges: a network is only ever as good as its weakest part.
